The Unexpected Joy of the Mismatch - Cause A Frockus

As a designer I spend a lot of time attempting to make disparate things harmonious. It's the job of a designer, after all, to arrange a wide variety of "stuff" in some kind of cohesive way, whether it's information, furniture or textiles.

From coffee shops to coworking

Five years ago I had a great home office. Really great. It had tons of natural light, whiteboards, exposed brick, sturdy wooden tables I built myself, a wall of design books and magazines, half-used sketchbooks, and all the paper I could ever want. I miss it sometimes.

What your agency's mission statement should say about you

The mission statement has become the text equivalent of the elevator pitch. It distills the entirety of your company - from culture to product, to experience to process - into a single piece of text. No pressure, right? A mission statement has become so much more than a simple description.

In Defense of the Clock

At some point the simple and taken-for-granted clock went from being the foundation of modern civilization to being so ubiquitous that we barely even notice it's there at all. Just think, there was a time where having a clock in the home meant winding it, and winding it often - maybe even once a day.

An Architecture of Thought

How studying to become an architect taught me to think about design I learned two major lessons in my years in architecture school: first, that design is my passion in life, in all its forms. Design is not a collection of geometry and color on paper; great design lives and breathes.

8 facts about a spot on a hill. by Michael Champlin

8 facts about a spot on a hill. ___ 1. I found the spot while looking for a good vantage point to take a photograph of downtown Tulsa. Turns out, it's way too far away. 2. I once sat in the back of my pickup with the girl I was dating and split a twelve-pack of PBR and watched the sunset at my spot.

Why Introverts Need "Creative Space"

It's happened enough times that I'm inclined to call it a trend: I start dating someone new, things go well, and then we reach a point - understandably, I admit - when this new person wants to spend every last bit of every weekend together. I reel back.

Inspiration has Destroyed my Productivity

The list makes me cringe, which is why I feel the need to share it: 10 Tumblr blogs, 4 WordPress installations, 6 Twitter accounts, 3 Instagrams, not to mention Facebook, LinkedIn, Dribbble et al. This is my social media / blogging footprint. I'm probably forgetting some. That's telling in itself.

Via Chicago

A story about love that isn't really about love. // May 12th, Austin Texas. I send a message to a woman in Chicago that reads: 'I want to drive into the country and look at the stars with you' the message continues '...except you're 974 miles away.'

The Tulsa Project
2010
Introduction

The format has evolved, but my concept for the Tulsa Project hasn't really changed all that much from the beginning. I felt like there was a need in Tulsa for a unique kind of publication, something that so far hadn't been filled. Something modern, simple, clean, and sophisticated.
