Melissa D McCaghren

Photographer and reporter

United States

I am a hard working, multi-award winning photographer, earning 10 individual photography awards in the Texas Press Association Better Newspapers contest.

While I have covered many subjects, among my favorites are sports and daily life. I have taken photos of several future NFL players during their days in high school or college, such as Cam Newton (Carolina Panthers), Malcolm Brown (New England Patriots), and Courtland Sutton (Denver Broncos) as well as state University Interscholastic League competitions.

Conversely, I have enjoyed taking photos of students testing the strength of their handmade balsa wood bridges, dining in a newly renovated cafeteria, and dance and cheer teams receiving their national championship rings. Wrecks, fires, theater productions, and school visits from Orbit of the Houston Astros are also among the many subjects I've covered.

In addition to photography, I can also write a variety of articles, ranging from city, county and school board meetings, features and the occasional sports article.

Whatever the assignment is however, I strive to ensure that it highlights the special moment in a person's life, be it a celebration or sad, but hard fought loss, or even as small as the first time they played with a beloved toy they received at Christmas.

Another tough night for the Burton basketball program took place on Friday night in Somerville. The Panthers suffered a 68-50 setback at the hands of the Yeguas, while the Lady Yeguas ran past the Lady Panthers, 74-46. Both teams return to action tonight when they host North Zulch with the girls game starting at 6 and the boys at 7:30.

Waco edges past Cubettes in area playoff, 57-53

HEARNE - In a back-and-forth tilt that came close to resembling a rugby match at points, it seemed that the last one to make a mistake would end up the loser between the Brenham girls basketball team and Waco during the pair's area playoff game.
