Police sergeant gains leadership training

CALUMET CITY | A three-day leadership training program has reinforced Calumet City Police Sgt. Pam Cap's desire to serve her community. Cap, who's served as a police officer for 22 years, was among 89 women chosen throughout the United States to attend the Vote, Run, Lead program offered by The White House Project.

Area residents answer call for volunteers

Lansing Police Chief Dan McDevitt said Monday morning that members of the Thornton Fractional South High School football team and other volunteers helped put sandbags along the Little Calumet River at 169th Court and Wentworth Avenue. The work on the river was being done strictly as a precautionary measure.

Wrapping patients in comfort

Recreational therapist Bridget Hanson helps not only her own patients but those all around the University of Chicago Medical Center in Chicago. The Schererville resident is just one member of Forefront Stitchers, a group that knits and crochets chemo caps and healing shawls for patients in the Cancer Resource Center and tiny hats and blankets for babies in the neonatal intensive care unit.

Taking steps to prevent suicide

MUNSTER | For the first time, an Out of the Darkness Community Walk will take place in Munster. The event, which raises money for suicide prevention and awareness, is set for Sept. 13 at Centennial Park. Two of the walk's biggest supporters are Barbara Smich and Nancy Rodgers, who lost their sons to suicide.
