How vulnerable women are suffering abuse in Britain's detention centres - Reaction

Around 2,000 women seeking asylum in the UK are detained every year. Between 77 and 85 per cent of these women are victims of sexual or gender-based violence, including rape, domestic violence, female genital mutilation and forced prostitution or sex trafficking. For many of these women, the process of being detained - especially indefinitely - re-traumatises them.

The UK needs to ensure its immigration laws don't harm trafficked women

In 2018, 1,981 women and girls were recorded as victims of human trafficking in the UK. Of these individuals, 1,263 were victims of sexual exploitation - 880 women and 383 girls. Human trafficking involves the exploitation of people, against their will, generally for financial gain.
