Italy's electronic underground: 'It's not a scene, more of an attitude'

Mine Italy's music history and it doesn't take long to hit on a strand of dance music outliers, from disco godfather Giorgio Moroder and the Italo movement to industrial pioneer Maurizio Bianchi, and techno DJs such as Marco Carola and Donato Dozzy. Yet these artists are the exceptions in Italy, even in the internet age.

Interview: Visionist

Hannah Wants: 2015's DJ phenomenon

Beneath the blistering afternoon sun, Hannah Wants is giving Mixmag a tour of Ibiza's San Antonio district. "I literally came here with a dream..." she says, breaking off to take a photo of the poster for that evening's gig at Amnesia. Her logo, front and centre, completes the sentence for her.

Ida Engberg & Adam Beyer

Despite protestations to the contrary, Adam Beyer looks dog-tired. Collapsed in a chair, he's playing absentmindedly with the frayed edge of a slim-fit, black jumper poking from the sleeve of his slim-fit, black leather jacket. "It's been on repeat for the last six months," he says, in his baritone voice.

Woo Life: an interview with Maxmillion Dunbar

As Maxmillion Dunbar, Andrew Field-Pickering creates sensate, intuitive electronic music: it's as if Field-Pickering, a voracious crate digger in his local record stores of Washington DC, has internalized decades of dance music-disco, boogie, go-go, hip-hop-refracting reference points through the right brain until they become snags of sonic phonemes in an advanced sonic language.

DENSE & PIKA: GOING BALLISTIC

In 2011, a run of hand-stamped white labels announced the arrival of yet-another anonymous techno project. Going by the name Dense & Pika, the unit specialised in bunker-optimised techno: all booming kicks and raw, hardware-derived physicality. Twelve inches like 'Buttplug' and 'Vomee' pre-empted the wave of second gen, British warehouse bangers, and yet these productions felt special, different.

What The Mercury Prize Shortlist Would Look Like If The Right People Were On The Panel | NOISEY

When the Mercury Music Prize nominations were announced last month, we weren't impressed. In fact we said they were a "staid group of albums, unrepresentative of the ethnic, age, social or musical mix of Britain... a narrow view of music picked by judges of a narrow background, creating the deeply false impression that British music has had its progressive, subcultural tendencies expunged."

Review: Machinedrum in Berlin

Set back from a torpid canal opposite Hallesches Tor, Horst Krzbrg's exterior cuts a modest prospect. Yet, once inside, the ex-post office sheds all trace of municipality, replacing it with beat-up sofas, sticky walls and the kind of sound system that ensures you feel the bassline in your chest cavity.
