I recently read a few pages from the book Art of Traveling by Alain de Botton. He describes how we view our worlds when we are traveling versus when we are “at home” or in a routine. I started thinking about how my own perspective on life differs when I’m traveling and when I’m in a routine.

By Lacy Edney, Contributing Reporter RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL - The favelas of Rio have arguably represented a dangerous side of the Cidade Maravilhosa, but with the pacification efforts, several favela communities have become a safe and welcoming point of interest for tourists.
As I turn to face my students, I’m horrified to see Ethan crawling across the desks. I can’t believe this is happening in my class! Panic alarms are going off in my head, my heart is beating fast, and I know I have to act before total chaos erupts. I walk over to Ethan, wrap my arms around his waist, and heft him to the ground. It’s at this moment that I wonder why I ever volunteered to teach a kindergarten class.
