People in parts of Merseyside are nearly three times more likely to be admitted to hospital for alcohol-related liver disease than the national average. A motorcyclist was sent to hospital after an accident caused severe delays in St Helens this morning. Drivers have been urged to avoid the Liverpool-bound carriageway at Windle Island on the A580 following a collision between two vehicles. The motorcyclist suffered a minor injury to his wrist after colliding with the back of a car as traffic slowed.

Top degree awards soar at John Moores university by up to 83.2%

The number of students at Liverpool John Moores University awarded firsts or 2:1s has risen by 83.2% since the introduction of tuition fees - the highest in the country. Students Rescued From "Reckless" Cathedral Roof Climb

A helicopter and two police fire crews were called out last Friday night to rescue four drunk Durham students who were found climbing on the roof of the Dean's house, part of the cathedral. It was other students who alerted police to the incident, which took place shortly after midnight, and the rescue operation is estimated to have cost several thousand pounds.

Liverpool has been named as the whiplash claim capital of Britain, according to new research. Findings show that 55 per cent of road accidents in the city result in a claim, compared to a national rate of 30 per cent. The proportion of accidents involving a claim increased by 1.5% nationwide.

Police have arrested two teenagers after a gang threatened tenants in Speke with a knife and firearm. Officers were called to Tarbock Road at 1.20pm this afternoon to reports of a disturbance outside a property. A window was smashed during the incident but no one was injured.
