Kalee Cummings

Staff Writer, Online Editor

United States of America

Kalee Cummings is a junior at Escondido Charter High School. She is a journalism student currently working as both a staff writer and an online editor for the school newspaper, the Charterian. As an online editor she publishes stories to the newspaper’s website. Kalee has additional experience publishing things through media from her internship with a focus on marketing for the company Jolyn swimwear. Thus, she is very familiar with online media and social networking.

Kalee is very involved academically, as she has been a 4.0 student and a member of the California Scholarship Federation throughout her high school career thus far. Having taken many AP and honors classes, and three college classes, Kalee has learned to manage her time well and stay organized and on track with her academic plans. Her experiences working as a tutor have also impacted her ways of interacting with people and helping them learn.

Outside of school, Kalee has been active in her local Escondido 4-H Club and the San Diego County 4-H program as a whole. She currently serves as a youth director of the San Diego County 4-H Management Board of Directors, and is a representative for the county 4-H program as a San Diego County 4-H All Star, which is the highest leadership ranking attainable within the county program.

In 4-H, Kalee works with other youth and adults to run the program and put on events. As a part of her position as an All Star, she and the All Star team for San Diego County worked to organize an achievement night for the whole county. After just over a year of planning the event, contacting sponsors, and gathering donations, the event was held at the Del Mar Fairgrounds Turf Club in October and hosted around 200 guests. Kalee and the two other All Stars on the team were the masters and mistresses of ceremonies for the event, displaying her public speaking skills.

Through 4-H, Kalee has also participated in public speaking competitions, progressing to and getting a gold medal at the state level competition many times. She has also participated in a mock interview competition at the state level, where she prepared a resume and cover letter for a potential job. She received a gold medal, which is the top honor, in this competition each year that she participated in it. These experiences have prepared Kalee to enter the professional world with poise and confidence.

Kalee is currently employed by the City of Carlsbad and works as a lifeguard. In the summer of 2015, she also volunteered with the California State Junior Lifeguard program and acted as an assistant to the instructors of the program. She has participated in the Junior Lifeguard program since she was eight. Her experiences working as a lifeguard have improved her communication skills and shown her level of maturity and responsibility.
