"Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life." We have all heard this quote in some iteration, but how much truth does it hold? As the internationalization programming coordinator at the University of South Carolina, Julie Medlin is living this advice as the line between her job and her passion is as blurry as it can get.
"There is nothing in life that you can't parallel with the tensions and volume and movement of music." - Keith Jarrett, American jazz and classical music pianist/composer Keith Jarrett's quote is music to the ears of Bert Ligon, director of jazz studies at the University of South Carolina.
Hamada's favorite thing about the outdoors is being able to disconnect. "Whether it be electronics or the stress of a busy work week and being a student, when you're really outside in the elements, you just don't think about that stuff," she says. "I believe that just being outside definitely has a healing aspect to a person.
David Beek went through a roller coaster of emotions on the day he turned 27 this past April. From being involved in a car accident, to finding out that that he was selected as one of six individuals from the University of South Carolina to receive a Fulbright Grant, Beek ended the day on top, forgetting all about the downside.
Artist Sarah Jane Ballentine feels a connection between art and music and the emotions they evoke through our senses. "Art is this visual representation of the same thing that we feel when we hear music ... but you feel and experience them both, and they are a lot alike" she says.
As the calendar turns to October and the weather begins to shift to the lower end of the thermometer, the NBA off-season comes to a close, with teams starting to get back into the swing of things as the preseason begins.
As South Carolina and Missouri dueled back and forth amidst a deluge of rain and lightning to decide who would emerge victorious, the game ultimately came down to the leg of South Carolina's kicker, and he followed through for the Gamecocks.
One of South Carolina's biggest tests of the year comes early in the season when the Georgia Bulldogs, the defending SEC champions, travel to Columbia in September. Georgia recently finished just short of a national championship in one of their best seasons in recent history.
The Gamecocks continued their stretch of preseason exhibition games Sunday, facing Virginia Tech in the "Hoops 4 Hurricane Relief" event that raised funds for those impacted by recent storms. The South Carolina offense struggled throughout the entire exhibition to hit shots, shooting only 34 percent from the field and 21 percent from deep for the game.
Fueled by a dominant defensive performance for the ages, the South Carolina football team played its most complete game of the season in a 48-22 blowout win over the Arkansas Razorbacks on Saturday. Three touchdowns from the defensive side of the ball blew the doors off this SEC matchup, and with two of these turnovers coming on back-to-back Razorback drives, it happened rather quickly.
