A Brief Representative History of African American Studies at Wesleyan

On December 4, 2018, Wesleyan faculty voted to grant department status to African American Studies. To provide context, we offer this timeline. The year after Wesleyan's founding in 1831, Charles B. Ray became the first Black student to attend the University, with plans to become a Methodist minister.

Freeman Scholars Reflect on Multiplicity of Experience, Varied Contributions to Community

Each year, 11 students from different Asian countries and regions are awarded the Freeman Asian Scholarship. Established by Mansfield Freeman in 1994 , the merit-based scholarship was intended to double the population of international students attending the University and to strengthen ties between the United States and different Asian countries.

Introduction October is LGBTQ+ History Month in the U.S., coinciding with National Coming Out Day on October 11. While its June counterpart, LGBTQ+ Pride Month, revolves around the present, History Month looks back to see the progress members of the community and their allies made in the fight for civil rights.

First Ankh'sGiving Brings Students of Color Together

The first Ankh'sGiving, a celebratory event conceptualized by Arline Pierre-Louis '19 for students of color (SOC) to gather and share their experiences, was held March 2 in Beckham Hall. Around 200 students attended the dinner, which featured various types of food, student performances, vendors, and a photo booth.

USLAC Leads Multi-Day Protest Demanding Custodial Hires

Members of the United Students Labor/Action Coalition (USLAC) and other students began a series of protests outside the Office of Admission at 8 a.m. on Wednesday, April 10, the first day of WesFest, to demand that the administration, specifically President Michael Roth '78, hire five more custodial workers.

African American Studies Granted Department Status

African American Studies (AFAM) was granted department status by a full-faculty vote on Dec. 4, 2018. The department will be making changes to its major requirements-affecting the class of 2023 and beyond-and has added a minor, which will be available to students this spring.

Gaining Traction at the Day Worker Center

Nestled in the corner of Escuela Avenue, lush vines and shrubs frame the Day Worker Center of Mountain View. Inside, the building is a hub of activity. During the day, employers come and go and are matched by staff in the center to workers who complete jobs from landscaping to childcare to envelope stuffing.
