Jay Scott Smith

News Anchor, KYW Newsradio; Freelance Writer & Consultant

United States

I am an award-winning veteran broadcaster, journalist, anchor, and writer with 15 years of professional experience.

A Detroit native, I graduated from Michigan State University in 2003 and later received my Master’s Degree in Journalism from Wayne State University in 2011. I began my radio career in 2005 at WQHH-FM in Lansing, Mich. In a career that’s included stops at the Detroit News, MLive.com, and the Asbury Park Press, I joined TheGrio — then a division of NBC News — in 2011. While there he covered major stories in the Midwest including Chicago’s issues with housing discrimination and gun violence as well as Detroit’s historic 2012 bankruptcy.

I joined KYW Newsradio in February 2019 after previously spending three years at WHYY, where he won Best Newscast and two Best Sports Feature Awards from the PA Associated Press in 2016 and 2017.

An experienced sports journalist, I've covered major events such as the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament, the Daytona 500, the NFL Draft, and the World Series.

I also teach journalism and broadcast editing at Lincoln University and have served as a mentor for young journalists and broadcasters for nearly a decade.
