At just 20 years of age, and still a DCU student, Sarah Torrans is already a fully-fledged Ireland international. Last summer, Torrans was in the reserve squad for the 2018 Women's Hockey World Cup, which saw the sport rise to prominence in the country as Ireland finished as runners up to the Netherlands.
St. Patrick's Athletic and DCU midfielder Jamie Lennon this week was a part of the Republic of Ireland U21 training camp. The call-up to the first squad, named by new manager Stephen Kenny, meant that the 21-year-old missed out on representing DCU in the Collingwood Cup this year.
Peamount United and DCU midfielder Niamh Farrelly capped off an impressive season with a nomination for Women's National League Senior Player of the Season. Farrelly's Peamount United fell just short in the FAI Women's Cup Final two weeks ago, losing 1-0 to Wexford Youths, despite dominating large periods of the game.
"I have had a great 3 years playing for DCU. We won the League at the end of 2015 which was such a good start to college football. Winning the O'Connor cup was definitely the highlight of my college football, it was the best end to college football I could have asked for and to win it along side the players and management I did made it even more special."
DCU scholarship athlete and Irish international cricketer, Una Raymond-Hoey, has been awarded an overseas development scholarship. While in Australia, Raymond-Hoey will play with South Perth CC and undertake her INTRA placement with the Western Australian Cricket Association.
The last three months have been a learning experience for First Year Engineering Student Robbie Powell. Powell competed in his first two major championships, including October's Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires, Argentina. However, Powell was first part of the Ireland team that took part in the European Swimming Championships in Glasgow in August.
DCU Women's Basketball last week lifted the NBCC Women's Division 1 league title with a 73-60 win over Ulster University. DCU had finished second in Division 1 North, behind Ulster University, with both teams progressing to the semi-final stage.
DCU Athletics again secured the men's and women's team titles at the Irish Indoor Track and Field Championships in Athlone IT recently. The championships saw the men take home a 13th consecutive title while a dominant performance from the women's team saw them win the team title for the 12th time on the bounce.
First year actuarial mathematics student and DCU Tennis player Seán McCullagh recently represented Ireland at the World University Championships in France. Ireland finished fourth at the tournament, beating China, before losing to eventual champions USA in the semi-final and then Germany in the battle for the final space on the podium.
