Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome is actually a 2-part disease. It often goes unnoticed because the symptoms alcohol consumption masks the warning signs. The second, and more serious phase starts while phase 1 is still occurring. The overlap is so subtle-and so closely mimics drunkeness or a hangover, that the damage doesn't become noticable until the person has been sober for a long while and symptoms don't improve.
