Bhumika Kulkarni

Independent journalist/ freelance writer

India

After 17 years in the print journalism world, having worked for leading Indian newspapers like The Hindu, The Times of India and The New Indian Express, I am embarking on a new journey of freelance writing, exploring newer forms and spaces.

I have had as much fun interviewing the first Indian in space, as I have enjoyed interviewing Bollywood stars. Or writing about how millets are making a great comeback on our plates, and featuring my city's young professionals who turn farmers on weekends.

I love writing and experimenting with different kinds of writing. My strength, though, lies in interviewing and profiling people, and writing in the lifestyle space. You can reach me on [email protected]

The parinda takes WING

There's something to say about the cool confidence blended with a meditated modesty that the younger generation of Hindi film actors wears on its sleeves these days. Just look at Ranbir Kapoor, and hear him hold forth on acting and films today... You'd like to believe Imtiaz Ali's Rockstar did that to him.

No degree teaches you what to eat

You can have your rice and eat it too, nutritionist and fitness expert Rujuta Diwekar told Indian women. And turned upside down all notions of starvation diets. Eat six small meals, she said, and more women flocked to her.

Bottling memories of grandma's food

It's such a natural act...to stand by and watch your grandma cook, and listen to her talk, about the food she's making, memories of the recipe, memories of her childhood or perhaps, her roots. It was during one such moment that filmmaker Jonas Pariente realised that food was a great entry point to other stories.

A market gone NUTS

Brown muddy-bodied peanuts in their shells are heaped on sheets on the floor by the roadside. Steam from peanuts being boiled on carts wafts up into the November air. Loud off-key party-horns rent the air as does the cackle of hundreds of people, and sellers shouting their ware.

The law of the jungle

Going on a jungle safari is one thing. And then again, going into a jungle where Mowgli and Bagheera supposedly once roamed, legends were born and beautiful stories created, is an entirely different thing. BHUMIKA K.
