The power of books in prisons 'must not be underestimated', charity says

Almost half of Britain's prisoners are not literate enough to manage daily living and employment tasks when they come out, a charity has warned. Haven Distribution wants inmates to be given access to books and reading lessons to bring down reoffending rates, adding that they play a crucial role in rehabilitation, self-worth, and life-long learning.

Exclusive: Equalities commissioner failed to declare Conservative Party fundraising

A commissioner at the U.K. equalities watchdog, which prides itself on impartiality, failed to declare her donation and fundraising activity for the Conservative Party, Newsweek International can reveal. Pavita Cooper, who is a commissioner at the Equalities and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) made donations totaling £3,500 to the Conservative Party itself, according to the Electoral Commission's website.

'Worst summer yet' for child hunger as foodbanks rely on reserves

This has been the 'worst summer yet' for millions of children facing holiday hunger, with foodbanks operating on reserves, according to an MP. Frank Field MP, who founded the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Hunger and Food Poverty, says the government must now set up a national scheme and be done with experiments, to prevent a repeat next summer.

Counter terror police are recalling official guidance which suggested that 'Muslims who believe they are oppressed' could be a sign of extremism. Human rights groups condemned the 12-page document produced by counter terrorism police in south-east England for undermining 'free expression and discrimination'.
