Anastasia Hacopian, PhD

Writer

Netherlands

I write for Dutch and English language print and digital media. Born in the Los Angeles area, I studied in Berkeley, San Francisco, and Berlin before settling in the Netherlands thirteen years ago. As the child of Japanese and Iranian-Armenian immigrants, my "otherness" gives me access to multiple cultures and points of view. This, and my academic training in foreign languages, literature, and cultural history, motivate my interest in interdisciplinary, intelligent storytelling.

MH 17 Left Amsterdam

It wasn't even midday and my brow was beaded with sweat. Summer break in the Netherlands had only just begun, and my kids were already whining from boredom. In another life, far away in Southern California, I would have hopped into the car and driven to Starbucks: frappuccino for me, pink Tazo tea for the kids, air conditioning.

'Tis The Season To Be in Blackface

When naming and shaming is not the best way to deal with racism I grew up in a suburb of Los Angeles, California as the daughter of two immigrants. My dad, an Armenian, came to the United States from Tehran in the 1950s. My mom arrived from Tokyo a decade after him.

of Mr. Currie's students, whom he told a gay love story, We Americans are worried about the bullying of our children. Social media feeds are full of stories of young people who have taken their own lives following on and offline harassment.

Huidskleur - Joop

Windsor, of "Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) Challenge".

In Antwerpen

"Good afternoon, teacher." "Hoi juf." "Nice ass."

How I Learned To Love People Who Love Black Pete - Passionate...

I will always remember when my daughter, five years old, came home from her Dutch school and told me there had been a birthday in class that day. "We sang 'Hanky Panky Shanghai.'" "What's that?" She showed me. She sang a Dutch song to the tune of 'Happy Birthday' and pulled her eyelids into...

Dutch December: When Winter Health is Wanting - Passionate Parenting

December is upon us. The Dutch refer to the phenomenon of the "decembermaand," because here, we celebrate three times: Sinterklaas, Christmas, and New Year's Eve. It is a busy and stressful time for many. The weather is cold and wet. In other words, our health is often wanting. I remember my...
