European stocks rose Thursday as sluggish euro-zone growth figures and dovish comments by Federal Reserve chair nominee Janet Yellen suggested that accommodative monetary policies from central banks will remain in place for some time. The benchmark Stoxx 600 index closed up 0.8% at 322.43.
European stocks ended lower, unable to hold on to early gains after a warning by Fitch Ratings over the U.K.'s deficit intensified concern about sovereign debt. The dovish tone of the surprise statement that accompanied the unchanged policy decision prompted the U.K.'s benchmark stock index, the FTSE 100, to close the day with over 3% gains at its highest level for a month.
