Thousands Blacked Out After Powerful Storm Hits Long Island

A powerful storm caused power outages to more than 74,000 homes and businesses in northern Suffolk County early Tuesday morning-some of which will remain in the dark for days, officials said. Although the majority of those who lost power have had it restored, about 20,000 remained blacked out at sundown Tuesday with about half of those still expected to be without power Wednesday, according to PSEG Long Island.

Long Beach Police to Get Shotspotter Technology

Long Beach city police officers will soon be responding more quickly to shootings thanks to ShotSpotter, a sophisticated gunshot detection system being deployed amid rising concerns about shootings on the barrier island. Nassau County Legis. Denise Ford (R-Long Beach) secured $500,000 to fund the technology, which uses acoustic sensors and software to pinpoint the location of gunfire within milliseconds of the shot going off.

Great Neck Lawyer Admits Stealing $800K from Clients

An elder law attorney from Great Neck has admitted to stealing $797,332 from her clients-five times the amount that authorities said she stole when she was arrested nearly two years ago. Martha Brosius, 50, pleaded guilty Monday at Nassau County court to two counts of grand larceny and a charge of scheme to defraud.
