Jeanita Lyman

Student journalist/editor

United States of America

I've had a passion for reading, writing, and language in general since an early age and began pursuing journalism in early 2014. Since beginning Skyline's journalism program, I have fine-tuned and honed my writing skills and begun developing multimedia skills to assist with storytelling. As news editor for The Skyline View during the past year, I've learned how to use Adobe InDesign for newspaper layout, to find and assign relevant news stories, and to troubleshoot some common editorial issues. During the 2014 NorCal Journalism Association of Community Colleges conference, I won second place for on-the-spot copy editing. Additionally, the advanced reporting class I took during the fall has provided me with an overview of various journalistic tools and a foundation in multimedia reporting using audio, video, social media, and basic data journalism. I've developed a comfort with researching and writing news stories and am looking forward to opportunities to further enhance my storytelling abilities using different writing styles and various forms of multimedia.

The View from Here

There's nothing like telling people you're a journalism student to get a candid glimpse into the public's varied and disjointed perspective of the field. Some people respond with a neutral "That's cool," or a positive "Oh! That's so cool!" However, many have stronger reactions that reveal a generally confused and often antagonistic attitude toward the...

Bullying is a widespread problem that has often been ridiculed or silenced in the past. This is due in part to its very nature, which silences those affected, making them feel unworthy of help and as if they're to blame. The media's silence on the issue is one hurdle that has been somewhat overcome.

The View from Here: Google shouldn't be your only friend

The days where we used to sarcastically say, "oh sure, it must be true if you read it on the internet," are long gone. We've quickly shifted to a mindset in which we turn to the internet to ask questions and verify information, and we're not sure of anything until we do.

Hunter S. Thompson is credited as the father of Gonzo journalism, with contradictory accounts of when he first coined the term. The genre itself is credited for revolutionizing journalism, and was used by Thompson and his contemporaries to find and tell interesting and profound stories from a genuine, personal point of view.

In the wake of uncertain economic times, millennials have grown up to be warier of capitalism than prior generations. However, having been immersed in capitalism their entire lives, Millennials tend to take out their angst, not through overt, organized revolt, but through their media consumption habits.

The View From Here: With Jeanita Lyman, editor in chief

What is journalism? What is news? These are the very basic questions we're asked early on in Skyline's journalism program. They're becoming increasingly difficult to answer, but one thing is certain about today's media landscape: There's a lot of crap out there. When it comes to getting our news, we don't know who to trust...

At the dawn of mass media in America, technology and culture coincided in a way that would change society forever. Technological advances and government fear of the masses combined with the birth of psychology to form the base of modern-day media. Everyone's familiar with the work of Sigmund Freud by now, and mentioning his name...

A 'retirement' that mixes politics with pints
