Today, RecycleMatch - a Houston-based startup that helps businesses sell or give away stuff to recyclers and manufacturers so that they don't have to send it to a landfill - took its online marketplace out of beta, unveiling several new features and services.
A number of startups in the Houston area are taking advantage of the green revolution. For the companies highlighted here, developing a strong niche customer base and then expanding it mainstream appears to be the recipe for success in any economic climate.
When it comes to industrial waste, the numbers are shocking. The EPA has estimated that companies in the U.S. spend an estimated $22 billion per year to send 214 million tons of materials to landfills. While some of that waste can be diverted to recycling programs, the more striking fact is the waste that ends up in landfills often still has tangible value.
