New medical professor aims to improve quality of care for Alberta seniors

(Edmonton) Older adults have a new ally at the University of Alberta. Andrea Gruneir, an assistant professor in the Department of Family Medicine, specializes in understanding people's needs for health care as they age. Gruneir is currently looking at older adults who move between sectors of the health-care system-such as between acute care and nursing homes-and how to ease those transitions.

The Wright reason for teaching

Medical graduate looks to Harvard to further public health education

Conrad Tsang was volunteering for a restorative justice program for young offenders when his future came calling. "The same people came through our program over and over again. It was usually teenagers who were Aboriginal and had already dealt with homelessness as part of their lives, and had dropped out of school at an early age and had no real adult mentors.

Canadian children need improved pain management in emergency departments

Samina Ali, an associate professor of pediatrics with the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry, is scrutinizing pain management in pediatric patients throughout Canada. Ali is the lead author of a study that examines survey results from 139 pediatric emergency physicians.

Outstanding student physician humbled by latest award

Peter Gill, MD/PhD '14, is no stranger to prestigious awards. Since he began medical school with the University of Alberta in 2006, he has won the Imperial Order of the Daughters of the Empire's War Memorial Scholarship Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee, a Leaders of Tomorrow Award from the Alberta Science and Technology Leadership Foundation, a Canadian Institutes of Health Research Rising Star Award and a Rhodes Scholarship.

Life in the Fast Lane

Some great discoveries have come out of the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry. For researchers Amanda Newton and Geoff Ball, their best discovery was each other. Newton, 38, specializes in child and adolescent psychiatry and is an associate professor of pediatrics with adjunct appointments to psychiatry and nursing.

Rural Alberta's Breathing Advantage

Barb Gibson, a vivacious retiree, had a big problem. The former elementary-school teacher from Camrose was recently diagnosed with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, or COPD. Like many seniors living in rural and regional areas in Alberta, she had neither the desire nor the means to drive for an hour each way, twice a week, to Edmonton to participate in any urban opportunities that would educate her on how to live with her disease.

Surgical professor honored for excellence in education

Jonathan White, professor of surgery at the University of Alberta, has been named a 2014 3M National Teaching Fellow. White is the sixth professor within the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry to receive this prestigious honour. "It's my job to help students see behind the surgeon's mask and inspire a wider range of students to learn about surgery," he said.
